How Bonus Taxes Work in 2026
The IRS classifies bonuses as supplemental wages. There are two methods your employer can use to calculate federal income tax withholding on your bonus:
Supplemental Rate Method (Most Common)
Your employer withholds a flat 22% federal income tax on bonus amounts up to $1,000,000. For amounts over $1 million, the rate increases to 37%. This is the simplest method and is used by most payroll systems. However, if your actual marginal tax rate is higher than 22% — such as 32%, 35%, or 37% — you will owe additional tax when you file your return.
Aggregate Method
Your employer combines your bonus with your most recent regular paycheck and calculates withholding as if the total were a single payment. This often results in more tax withheld but more closely matches your actual tax liability, reducing surprises at tax time.
No Alaska State Tax on Bonuses
Since Alaska has no state income tax, your bonus is only subject to federal taxes and FICA contributions — giving you a higher after-tax bonus compared to states with income taxes.
